Risk Based Software Testing

In today’s world, more and more companies are focussing towards Risk Based Testing (RBT). It’s a comprehensive approach to risk rank the requirements and prioritising the test approach. The requirements are assessed on the basis of two factors; Business Criticality Risk and Failure Probability Risk. This would result in the prioritisation of the requirements and the corresponding mapped test cases. The objective is to increase the confidence in testing and optimising the test effort cost.

There are number of benefits at the Project and Testing levels in applying the RBT approach. Some of them are mentioned below: – A common understanding between all the stakeholders on different types of risk. – Identified focussed areas for all the project and test activities. – Developers can focus on developing critical requirements first and testing team can target to test those requirements on a priority. – Defects can be detected within critical risk areas in the initial phase of test execution. – Minimising the threat to the Project objectives.

It’s a MUST do activity in every project to prioritise the focus areas before starting the software development life cycle.
