Traceability Matrix

Traceability Matrix helps in mapping the Software Requirements with the Test Scenarios/Cases. It’s a useful test document to carry out testing activities, especially in an environment where requirements keep on changing.

Whenever there is a change in the requirement, the Test Analyst can refer to this document to identify the Test Cases getting impacted. This would help in understanding the impact and coming up with an additional testing effort required to accommodate that change. In the absence of the Traceability Matrix, it would be difficult to understand the scope and change impact on the testing effort.

Another value add of this document is to include Defects information in it. That way, there is complete mapping of the software requirements to the Test Cases and further to the Defects logged in the test execution phase. Such information can be further used as an input to the Testing Metrics.
